Age Groups, a short essay: (The Chart is below this)
Players’ birth dates determine the Age Group they are in. The Age Group starts on August 1 and ends on July 31. (see chart below)
Teams are made up based on Age Groups.
In the Broome County Soccer League, as with just about every other league, the Age Groups are 8 and under, U10, U12, U14, U16 and U19. Most clubs have two teams in each of these Age Groups- for example, in the U12 Age Group; there is a U-11 team and a U-12 team.
These teams will most likely play other teams in the same Age Group.
For Play, each Age Group has at least 2 Divisions: For example, a U-12 Division 1 and a U-12 Division 2, and sometimes there is a Division 3 if there is too many teams. Coaches will apply to the Broome Age Group coordinator (usually an officer in the Broome County Soccer Club) to play in a Division based on: 1- their age, and 2- the teams skill level.
Sometimes a U-11 team will apply to play in Division 1 because the coach feels they need to be challenged, and doesn't mind maybe not winning a game. A team with players that are U-12 according to the chart below, will most likely have to play in Division 1. Sometimes, because of a shortage of players, a U-11 team will take U-12 player(s). This means that the team is really a U-12 team, and if they went to a tournament, they would be registered as U-12. Don’t worry, the parents of that team will be the first to tell you that most of the team is U-11, and so the story goes.
A U-11 Team could be placed in Division 2 or 3 depending on factors determined by the Age Group Coordinator. The Age Group Coordinators (at Broome) trys their best to place teams based on their preferences, last year's record, their age group and their geographic location. It is not that easy, sometimes a third division has to be added, this clouds the lines between the age groups. Sometimes to be in a division 2 requires your team to travel great distances, so rather than make you travel to Corning, one weekend and Horseheads the next (from Oneonta), your coach asks to be placed in a division based on geographic location.
Once a player reaches the U15 Age Group, they are eligible to try out for either the U-15, U-16 or U-19 team.
Tryouts- Sunday October 18th at the Soccer Hall of Fame
